EAA Seminar: "Python for Actuaries"

Organised by the EAA – European Actuarial Academy GmbH in cooperation with the Aktuarvereinigung Österreichs (AVÖ).

Introduction
As the actuarial field evolves with technology, learning Python has become increasingly important. Python is a versatile programming language that enables actuaries to efficiently handle large datasets, perform complex statistical analyses, and apply machine learning techniques. Whether you are working with pricing models, risk assessments, or data visualization, Python can significantly enhance your productivity and decision-making.

In this seminar, we will cover:

• Python Basics: An introduction to Python programming, focusing on data structures and fundamental syntax.
• Data Manipulation: Working with datasets using Pandas for data cleaning and transformation.
• Data Visualization: Creating insightful charts and graphs using Matplotlib and Seaborn.
• Machine Learning: Applying basic machine learning models to actuarial data.

This seminar is designed to give participants hands-on experience and practical knowledge of how Python can be a valuable tool in your day-to-day work.

The seminar will be held in person, giving participants the opportunity to learn on site alongside other actuarial professionals, exchange ideas directly, and receive immediate support from the lecturers. The venue is the 4-star Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier in Vienna (details below). The evening event on the first day is giving participants the opportunity to connect, discuss practical questions, and build their professional network in an informal setting.

Learning Objectives & Approach

The purpose of this seminar is to equip actuaries with practical Python skills that they can apply directly to their professional work. Python offers powerful tools for data analysis, visualization, and machine learning, making it an invaluable asset in modern actuarial tasks.

The seminar is structured to provide a mix of interactive learning methods. We will use Python notebooks to combine theoretical teaching with hands-on programming exercises. Participants will not only receive direct instruction but also engage in self-guided practice and group exercises, ensuring a deeper understanding of the material.

Participants

This seminar is suited for actuaries (and actuaries in training), interested persons and for everyone who wants to get to know the topic (more precisely). Previous knowledge in programming is not necessary. As participants have to solve programming exercises throughout the seminar, a laptop with internet access is mandatory.

Lecturers

Jonas Offtermatt
Prof Dr Jonas Offtermatt is a professor at DHBW Stuttgart specializing in programming, software engineering, actuarial data science, and insurance mathematics. He has held leadership roles in the insurance industry and is an expert in insurance analytics and data science. Prof. Offtermatt is also a member of the Deutsche Aktuarsvereinigung (DAV) and contributes to actuarial education through teaching and research in areas such as data protection and data science in insurance.

Alexander Brandt
Before his appointment as Professor of Data Science and Digital Technologies at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Stuttgart in 2023, Dr Alexander Brandt, who holds a doctorate in Physics, spent over 16 years at Robert Bosch GmbH in various leadership roles in Germany and abroad. His work focused on developing advanced algorithms and shaping marketing strategies for vehicle safety systems. Most recently, he served as Chief Expert, utilizing large language models to support automotive market observation and understanding.

Fees & Registration Details

The coffee-breaks and lunches as well as the seminar dinner are included in the seminar fee. The accommodation is not included in the seminar fee and must be booked directly with the hotel.

Early Bird Registration Fee (until 19 January 2026):

• For private customers only: €1,164.00 (€970.00 + 20% VAT).

Regular Registration Fee (from 20 January 2026):

• For private customers only: €1,536.00 (€1,280.00 + 20% VAT).

• Due to tax regulations, we are unfortunately unable to issue invoices to businesses. We can only accept private billing addresses. Please enter your private billing address when completing the registration form.

Please submit your registration using our online form below. We recommend registering for the seminar as soon as possible because of the expected demand. If there are more persons interested in this seminar than places available, we will give priority to the registrations received first.

Your registration is binding. Cancellation is only possible up to 6 weeks before the first day of the event. If you cancel later, the full participation fee is due. You may appoint someone to take your place but must notify us in advance. EAA has the right to cancel the event if the minimum number of participants is not reached.

Prepayment is mandatory. Please make sure you enter the correct and final billing details when registering below. We will send you an invoice via email. Please allow a few days for handling and always give your invoice number when you effect payment. All bank charges are to be borne by the participant.

The seminar will take place at the 4-star Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier. The hotel is centrally located in Vienna, in a quiet historic Biedermeier-style passage, and offers a comfortable and professional setting for training events. On site, participants also have access to two restaurants, a café, and a garden area for breaks. The hotel provides a fitness and sauna area for guests staying overnight.
